Full MILSPEC
AN/PVS-14
Monocular Kit from KERIF Night Vision uses only the highest quality
L-3 or ITT Image Tubes, Optical Lenses, Housing Components
and Electronics on the
market today. Electro-Optical tools designed specifically to meet the
diverse demands of our rugged Military and Law Enforcement
Professionals. Like buying a car, you have many features
like engine, transmission, and suspension
that can make it a stock model or a high performance
machine. With little differences on the outside to discern
between the good, bad & the ugly, you have to read &
understand the build sheet or take the salesman's word for
it. We give you the Factory Data Sheet and in some
instances, let you take a test drive.
Differences like the clarity of the optical lenses
versus just glass; whether the components used in the power supply &
electronics package are made in the U.S. or overseas or if
they are new or used; whether you want the housing made in
the USA that meets MILSPEC
standards with rubber seals that allows submersion without worry, or something made
overseas that you
can't splash with water; you want to be sure that when using your Helmet Mount,
the housing has brass screws (not plastic or other cheap
metal) to
automatically turn the unit On/Off, saving your batteries
and reducing the step of turning it back on in an
emergency.

Larger
differences like the tubes (engines) can be selected to
meet your needs, and with our access to virtually every
system available, we will do our best to meet or exceed
your expectations, without breaking your budget. Just
like a car, even if you have a big block with ungodly
horsepower, you still have to have other components
designed to match its performance potential. You
wouldn't put an Indy Car Race Engine in a Yugo, yet some
manufacturers do just that to gain the competitive
pricing edge and you are the one stuck wondering why you
didn't call us.
Let's talk about some of the uses of the
AN/PVS-14 Monocular.
The most common use is as a hand-held pocket scope
that easily fits inside a BDU (Battle Dress Uniform)
Pocket, or jacket pocket and is used for walking around &
area surveillance.
TIP: By maintaining one eye to the darkness, while using
the monocular exclusively with other, will help prevent
"Night Blindness" caused by molecules called
"Rhodopsin". The Rod of your eye undergoes a change in shape as
it absorbs light. Rhodopsin is the chemical that allows natural
Night-Vision, and is extremely sensitive. When exposed to a
spectrum of light, the pigment immediately bleaches and takes
about 30 minutes to regenerate fully, although most of the
adaptation occurs within the first five or ten minutes in the
dark. Rhodopsin in the human rods is less sensitive to the
longer red wavelengths of light, so many people use red light to
help preserve night vision as it only slowly depletes the eye's
Rhodopsin stores in the rods and instead is viewed by the cones. One of the best features of the PVS-14 style
Monocular's is the Variable Gain Control Knob that
works in conjunction with the Automatic Brightness
Control to adjust the image
for you to see it properly, without blasting
your pupil into submission.
These are a few of the main drawbacks of the PVS-7 Type Goggles, because both eyes are stimulated with a bright green image that can't be adjusted beyond what the Automatic Brightness Control offers, and when the goggles are removed, you may have difficulty seeing anything for several minutes. That could prove fatal if driving, flying, or engaged in CQB operations.
For
prolonged use, a Headmount can be priceless. By
using the chin straps and head straps, each unit allows for vertical
& fore-and-aft adjustments for either left or right eye. For clear images, the objective lens and eyepiece
(Diopter) focus for various levels of vision enhancement.
Automatic Brightness Control and Bright
Source Protection are standard.
The PVS-14 is also equipped with a built-in infrared
light-emitting source and the variable gain control allows the user
to increase or decrease image brightness for best possible contrast.
Don't overlook the importance of having additional
Infrared Lights to enhance the visibility of longer ranged
targets, covertly light up dark overhangs and blind
corners, and even mark positions, vehicles, personnel and
other points of interest by using field programmable
beacons.
Lights that are weapons Mountable, like the Surefire
Vampire and others can be outfitted with IR Filters and
pressure switches.

Range
Tests showed significant clarity and sturdiness when mounted on
Military 5.56 Rifles. This versatile Night Vision System
enables walking, driving, weapon firing, short-range surveillance
and map reading in both moonlight or starlight conditions. When used
as a Night Vision Weaponsight, you can use the standard Fixed Height
Mount and the front iron sight to aim, but to increase accuracy and
combat effectiveness, you'll still need something else to help you aim.
There are three types of Weapons Mounts we carry for the PVS-14’s.
We
have the Fixed Height Mounts A3256348

The
easiest, but typically the most expensive way is to use
LASER's mounted to the top or
side of your weapon and sighted in. KERIF Night Vision is proud to
offer several variations of LASER Aiming Systems that are guaranteed
to work for your setup. Please call for more details on what Laser
systems may be available to you since some are Restricted to Federal
Agencies only and require End User Agreements.
If you need to increase your range capabilities periodically, and
still want that CQB set-up for close range situations, the SpecterDR
(Dual-Role) Optical Sights from ELCAN
are designed to work with Night Vision and offers you the option of
either 1X to 4X Magnification or 1.5 to 6X, in addition to a Red Dot
Center Point, and Ballistic Ranged Reticle (in either 5.56 or 7.62*
weapon types).
*Some Pinnacle or Thin Filmed PVS-14's aren't
recommended to use above 5.56 caliber weapon types unless you have a
"Weapons Grade Tube" installed. When ordering, please tell us your
set-up so we can install a tube designed specifically to handle the
recoil of up to .50 caliber weapon types that sometimes create a
"Blooming Effect" or Spots to appear, and may eventually render the
tube inoperable, and void your warranty. Spending a little more now
can save you thousands later.
Another method that can pinpoint a target, using 1X (no
magnification) is to combine the PVS-14 Night Vision Monocular with
an Aimpoint Red Dot Sight or an
EOTech
Holographic Sight, either mounted directly behind the Sight or Head-Mounted for
continual visual enhancement and approach the sight as necessary.

For
Hand-Held use, you can attach a 3X Afocal Magnifier to increase
your recognition and detection ranges. When you increase the
magnification, you also decrease the available 40˚FOV (Field-of-View)
down to a 13˚FOV, which understandably equates to 1/3 of the
PVS-14's capabilities. The 5X Afocal Magnifier reduces the FOV to
7.7˚(1/5 of the image), so you have to have a steady hand, a resting
spot or a Tripod to fix on an object.
TIP: 5X
Magnifiers
are NOT recommended for use with Head/Helmet Mount applications
because of the Weight, and the narrow 7.7˚Field of View makes it
difficult to maintain position on your intended target. If you plan
to use a tripod for stabilization or use the system from a sitting
or prone position, this would be preferable.
Magnifiers
usually include a Slip-On Adapter for the PVS-4 and PVS-7, that allows you to quickly install
them on the objective end and remove it instantly when necessary.
TIP: If you aren't going to be standing
still or making moderate movements, we recommend you thread the
magnifier into the objective lens aperture to prevent it from accidentally falling
off and breaking.
Both magnifiers are interchangeable with PVS-7 Goggles.
